In 1992, Lake Erie Land Company took ownership of Sand Creek Country Club and residential community and began acquiring key parcels of land in Northwest Indiana. While developers, the mission of the company stretches far beyond property sales. LEL's mission is to attract companies and their executives to Northwest Indiana, promote quality jobs in the region, and add substantially to the quality of life in Northwest Indiana.

LEL is a subsidiary of NiSource, Inc., a Fortune 500 company with headquarters in Merrillville, Indiana, whose operating companies engage in all phases of the natural gas business, as well as electric generation, transmission and distribution. NiSource recently merged with Columbia Energy Group, creating the largest natural gas distributor east of the Rockies, with wholesale and retail electric operations.

After acquiring the property at Sand Creek, LEL shaped a quality private country club facility into one of the Midwest's premier recreational facilities. Featuring 27 holes of world-class golf and clubhouse amenities, Sand Creek has been ranked as one of the Midwest's top courses by Golf Digest Magazine, and it has been featured on the cover of Indiana Business Magazine. The course is ranked as one of the most challenging in the Midwest and the club's facilities are ranked among the nation's finest. In 1996, Sand Creek was named "Best of Golf" by Links Magazine, and was the first fully certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System in the State of Indiana. In 2000, Sand Creek received the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America's National Environmental Steward Award for U.S. private golf courses. Sand Creek is also home to a luxurious residential development, with homes ranging in value well over one million dollars.

Adjacent to Sand Creek, LEL is developing Coffee Creek Center, recently named as one of the world's 26 most innovative communities. Featured in publications such as Time, Metropolitan Home, and This Old House, Coffee Creek Center has been recognized as a national model of sustainable development. Sustainable development is a strategy for growth that preserves natural resources without sacrificing the necessities of a modern economy. Featuring a wide variety of homes for a wide range of income levels, Coffee Creek Center is a series of mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented neighborhoods offering homes, workplaces, and retail centers settled among hundreds of acres of greenspace and environmental restoration. The project has been designed with the nation's foremost experts in sustainable design, including William McDonough & Partners, Desert Springs Companies, Conservation Design Forum, and J.F. New & Associates.

Currently, LEL's land holdings include several hundreds of acres of commercial and industrial property in and around the intersection of Interstate 94 and State Route 49, which is being planned as an eco-industrial location. In addition, LEL is also Northwest Indiana's first wetland banking company, with a first 200-acre site in Lake Station, Indiana.
