Chesterton, IN-Lake Erie Land Company's Coffee Creek Center is one of five developments featured in the book Designing Sustainable Communities, Learning from Village Homes by Mike and Judy Corbett. The book tries to assist those who are attempting to move away from environmentally destructive practices and socially inappropriate trends that have produced the vast majority of homes and communities over the past century. The authors have chosen five case studies to demonstrate land use efficiency that creates a sense of community and a setting where basic human needs can be fulfilled.
The Coffee Creek Center case study focuses on the master plan that calls for a pedestrian-oriented community made up of several mixed-use neighborhoods centered around 185 acres of restored natural habitat and about 230 acres of parks and greens. The master plan provides for neighborhoods located on either side of central open space and Coffee Creek, with a path system connecting common areas throughout the site. For more information on the 640-acre project that is slated for up to 2,000 residential units and over 3 million square feet of commercial, office and retail space, please visit www.coffeecreekcenter.com.
