Chesterton, IN- Lake Erie Land Company's Coffee Creek Center was featured in the January 2002 issue of News-Notes, a publication of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The article focuses on the importance of Coffee Creek Center's mixed-use components, ranging from large corporate offices to small diverse areas that can serve office, retail, or residential needs. It also discusses the role of projects like Coffee Creek Center as a means to eliminate urban sprawl and the increased commutes, infrastructure, and pollution that are associated with sprawl.
"Increasingly, developers and agencies are realizing the importance of blending mixed-use land plans with the environment. We are very pleased that agencies like the EPA are highlighting projects that demonstrate this balance," said Lake Erie Land Company's Director of Land Development, Kevin Warren. The Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve, the 180-acre focal point of the shared public space is also discussed in the article. The preserve is owned and managed by the Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the public's needs for open space and the management of the Preserve. More than 5 miles of trails wind through the Preserve, complemented by overlooks and boardwalks. The Preserve is also home to an amphitheater and a pavilion that are available for public and private events. Coffee Creek Center is a more than 640-acre project in Northwest Indiana slated for up to 2,000 residential units and over 3 million square feet of commercial, office and retail space.
